I got an idea from Cynthia Hitz @sonrisadelcampo and Krista Applegate @kristaapplegate at ACTFL that I really wanted to try. It was low-tech and I loved it!

They suggested sketching a setting on a piece of paper, and then sketching some little people as your characters. Then, students either read or listen to the story and make the characters move around within the scene. This was perfect for chapter 7 of my Spanish 2 class’ current novel!

In this chapter, the main character is moving around the city of Tijuana and making her way across the border with a coyote. She is then caught and sent to jail, then deported. It has so much movement going on that it was perfect for this activity!

Here is the scene and the characters I made for my students to use. I will share tomorrow how this goes!

Did you have the students cut up the characters and move them in the correct position while you read the chapter?

Yes, they moved them around just like pieces on a game board!

Thank you. I’ve been struggling w/ all that is involved in this chapter. I love this idea!

Love it! Look forward to using it next year when we read this book again. Thanks for sharing.
